We looked for the plaque but couldn’t find it

Monday, December 8th, 1997

Hi – I want to share with you an experience I had so that you can see how your wonderful service has been used in unexpected ways. My mother passed away Dec.3.1997. When my brother and I left the hospital, we went to her apartment just to make sure everything was turned off and locked up. As we walked in, we began talking about the little plaques and sayings my mother liked to put up in different rooms.
I said that my favorite had always been a plaque I had bought her on one of my trips to Utah.  The saying was something like, “Your life is God’s gift to you.  What you do with your life is your gift to God.”  We briefly looked through her apartment for the plaque but couldn’t find it.  We knew it would turn up eventually.
The funeral was Mon., Dec. 8.  As I was beginning to get ready, I thought I would check the WOW message for that day and see if it was particularly inspirational and appropriate.  The message for that day was, “Life is God’s greatest gift to man, and what we do with our life is our gift to God.” I suppose there are many who would say it was merely coincidence.  But the odds of that specific quote on that specific day are just too astronomical to be chance.  I believe my mother was telling me that she was still around, that she was keeping an eye on things, and that she heard my brother and I talking.
The Lord works in mysterious ways – including using your service as a medium.

Quotes in my Church Binder

Denis & Family,

I think that the home web site is great!  I have long wondered about you and your family.  I have many times in the past told friends about the wow site and told them that they should subsribe.
Our family has a daughter serving a mission in Portugal.  She entered the mission home last October, and left for Portugal in December.  I very often include one of the quotes in my letters to her. Also, I keep a few of my favorites in my church binder just in case I get asked for a scripture or thought.  Its great to be prepared.
I just wanted to say thanks, I do greatly appreciate the time that you spend on this project. …….Keith

Dear Brother Nurmela,

You are the most amazing person.  How one man can manage to send a different inspirational quote EVERY SINGLE DAY to over 1200 is amazing to me.  You have more dedication than I could ever have.    I admire you very much, you do something that few people would ever try to do.

I am actually a convert to the Church.  I am 16 years old and was baptised on June 21 of this year. (1997) :) A few months before my baptism, my friend and I would write up little quotes for each other every day.  They were our “thoughts for the day”.  Sometimes I’d borrow a good one from you.  Anyway I’d just like to thank you again.  Particularly for the quote on being cheerful.  I can’t remember what day that it was but, I had been going through a phase when I just wasn’t myself and it sort of reminded me to cheer up.  Thanks.
Sincerely,
Stephanie (of the Kirkland Washington stake)

Awaiting the Temple

Saturday, April 13th, 1996

just a note to let you know how much i appreciate your words each day.  i am new to the church (i have a husband and two sons who have graduated from college that do not yet belong to the church), and i am anxiously awaiting the anniversary of my baptism (10/27/96) so i can go to the temple and take out my endowments.  your comments on the salt lake temple reminded me of that great day coming….. i live in Alaska and i know the Seattle temple is closest to us, but i have dreamed of going to the salt lake temple and know that it is where i must go this first time.  even more special to me is that the two people who were responsible for my conversion will be going with me to the temple.  it will truly be a trip to remember.
thanks so much for the bright spot in my mail each day! sincerely,
Carole from anchorage
